The Whaitua Kapiti Project completed its work in late 2024, and it highlighted the poor state of our waterways. We invited them to the Raumati Community Board to present their work, and there was a lot of interest from the community in our local streams. We decided it was an opportune time to address the condition of the Wharemauku Awa, and we initiated Our Vision for the Wharemauku. In developing the Vision, we put the call out to all the local groups working on various parts of the stream, KCDC, GW, Puketapu Hapu, and anyone else who was interested.

What emerged was a clear image of people's hopes and aspirations for the Stream, as well as an understanding of what has held back progress in the past. We then established a Wharemuaku Catchment Group to bring together the various work streams, to act as a funnel for funding, to advocate for the stream, and to be a contact point for anyone who may wish to get involved. We have now established a relationship with Greater Wellington and we plan to have regular meetings with key staff in KCDC.

The Wharemauku Catchment Group will oversee the vision to restore the mana and the mauri of our beautiful Wharemauku Awa.
